Where to Stay for Business in Washington, DC
The DC area is three jurisdictions and three airports — and the campus decides both which airport you fly and whether Metro can carry you.
The DC area is really three markets — Northern Virginia, the District, and suburban Maryland — wrapped around one Beltway and served by three airports. The headquarters skew heavily to Virginia (the defense-and-tech contractors in Tysons and the Dulles corridor, plus Amazon and Boeing in Arlington), with a downtown DC cluster and a Bethesda cluster in Maryland. Two questions decide the trip before the hotel does: which of the three airports, and whether Metro reaches the campus. Get those right and the sprawl behaves.
“In Washington, the campus tells you the airport. Reagan for the city and Arlington, Dulles for the Reston corridor, BWI when the fare matters — and Metro for the rest.”— Rachel Julian, Founder & Editor-in-Chief
Which airport — Reagan (DCA), Dulles (IAD), or BWI?
Three airports, and the right one depends on the campus. Reagan National (DCA) is close-in — minutes from the District and Arlington (National Landing is practically next door) and on Metro — the default for downtown and Arlington trips. Dulles (IAD) is far west in the Dulles corridor, so it's the obvious choice for Reston and Herndon (~10 minutes) and for long-haul and international routes. Baltimore (BWI) to the north is often the cheapest (a Southwest hub) and reasonable for Maryland and Bethesda. And Metro connects much of it — the Silver line now runs all the way to Dulles. The rule: DCA for the city and Arlington, IAD for the Reston corridor, BWI for the fare.

Coverage is the DC-area Fortune 500 and marquee HQs across Virginia, the District, and Maryland. Boeing relocated its headquarters here (to Arlington) in 2022; Amazon's HQ2 is its second headquarters, not a relocation of the Seattle HQ.

The standard
In Washington, "where to stay" starts with two questions: which of three airports, and does Metro reach the campus? Arlington and the District are Reagan-and-Metro trips; the Reston corridor is a Dulles trip; Bethesda leans Maryland and the Red line. Match the campus to the airport and the hotel, and one of the country's most spread-out markets turns simple.
