Where to Stay for Business in Chicago
Chicago's headquarters split between the downtown Loop and a ring of northern suburbs — and half the big names aren't downtown at all.
Chicago looks like a downtown town and half-behaves like a suburban one. The Loop and the West Loop hold a genuine cluster of headquarters — United, CME, McDonald's, and more — but an equal share of the metro's biggest companies sit 25 to 35 miles north, in the Lake Cook Road corridor and the Lake County pharma campuses. Book "downtown Chicago" for an Abbott or Walgreens meeting and you've signed up for an hour on the Edens each way. Two choices decide the trip: which district, and which of two airports.
“Chicago is a downtown and a long northern suburb, and they don't share an airport. Book the wrong one and the Edens Expressway owns your morning.”— Rachel Julian, Founder & Editor-in-Chief
Which airport — O'Hare or Midway?
Two airports, and the right one depends on the district. O'Hare (ORD) on the northwest side is the big international hub — and the practical choice for the northern suburbs and the O'Hare corridor, which it sits among. Midway (MDW) on the southwest side is smaller, a Southwest stronghold, and usually the quicker ride to downtown and the West Loop. The rule: Midway for a downtown trip, O'Hare for the suburbs (and for connections). For far-north Lake County, Milwaukee's airport (MKE) is worth a look too.

The standard
In Chicago, "where to stay" is really "downtown or the suburbs — and which airport." The Loop and West Loop are a Midway-and-walk trip; the Lake Cook corridor and the Lake County campuses are a fly-into-O'Hare, stay-in-the-suburbs trip that has nothing to do with the skyline. Match the district, the hotel, and the airport, and the metro runs smoothly.
