Where to Stay for Business in San Antonio

By Rachel Julian, Editor-in-Chief · · 5 min read

San Antonio's business heart is not the River Walk. Both Fortune 500 HQs sit in the northwest corridor — about 20 minutes from the tourist downtown.

Direct answer: San Antonio's two Fortune 500 headquarters are both in the northwest corridor, not downtown. USAA is in the South Texas Medical Center (9800 Fredericksburg Rd); Valero is farther northwest at I-10 and Loop 1604, by La Cantera. For either, stay in the northwest — the Medical Center for USAA, La Cantera / The RIM for Valero — rather than on the River Walk, which is about 20 minutes southeast. San Antonio International (SAT) is the only commercial airport, about 15–20 minutes from both campuses.

San Antonio fools business travelers. The city everyone pictures — the River Walk, the Alamo, the convention hotels downtown — is not where the work is. Both of San Antonio's Fortune 500 headquarters, USAA and Valero, sit in the northwest corridor, roughly 20 minutes from downtown. Book a River Walk hotel off the postcard and you've traded a short commute for a scenic one.

“San Antonio's business district isn't the River Walk. It's the northwest corridor — and that's where you book.”— Rachel Julian, Founder & Editor-in-Chief

Which airport?

San Antonio International (SAT) is the only commercial airport, and it's conveniently placed — about 15 minutes from the Medical Center and 20 from La Cantera. There's no second airport to weigh and no reason to route through Austin; SAT serves the whole city and sits north-central, close to both campuses.

San Antonio's business submarkets — and who's in each

NW / Medical Center
The South Texas Medical Center off I-10 and Loop 410: USAA (9800 Fredericksburg Rd). Dense with business hotels.
La Cantera / I-10 & 1604
The far-northwest retail-and-office cluster around The Shops at La Cantera and The RIM: Valero (One Valero Way).
Downtown / River Walk
The tourist and convention core — great for a conference at the Henry B. González Convention Center, but about 20 minutes from both HQs. Not the base for a USAA or Valero visit.

Verified, campus-by-campus — where to stay, which airport, and the real nearby hotels.

What should you check wherever you land?

Submarket gets you close; the room still has to protect the work. Run any San Antonio hotel through the Sales-Ready basics — a real work surface, a quiet room, a lobby you'd host in — using the hotel details that decide the trip and the Sales-Ready Index.

The standard

In San Antonio, "where to stay" comes down to one correction: not downtown. Both Fortune 500 HQs are northwest, SAT is close to both, and the River Walk — lovely as it is — is a 20-minute detour from your meeting. Book near the campus and save the Riverwalk stroll for after the deal.
