Where to Stay for Business in the Bay Area

By Rachel Julian, Editor-in-Chief · · 7 min read

The Bay Area is 50 miles of tech HQs and three airports — and the most common mistake is flying into SFO for a campus that's an hour south of it.

Direct answer: The Bay Area's headquarters span roughly 50 miles from San Francisco through Silicon Valley to the East Bay, and the two decisions that matter are the submarket and the airport. San Francisco (Salesforce, Wells Fargo, Uber, Gap, Airbnb, Levi Strauss and more) is walkable downtown — fly SFO. Silicon Valley — Santa Clara / North San Jose (Nvidia, Intel, Cisco, AMD, Applied Materials, Broadcom, ServiceNow, PayPal, Western Digital), Cupertino (Apple), and downtown San Jose (Adobe, eBay) — is served far better by San José Mineta (SJC) than by SFO. The mid-Peninsula (Google, Meta, HP; Gilead, Visa, EA on the bayside corridor) sits between the airports, closer to SFO. The East Bay — Fremont (Lam Research, TD Synnex), Oakland (Clorox, PG&E), the Tri-Valley (Workday, Ross), and San Ramon (Robert Half) — flies Oakland (OAK) or SJC. And Netflix sits down in Los Gatos, off SJC. Match the hotel to the campus, and fly the airport that's actually close.

The Bay Area fools business travelers worse than any market in the country. "San Francisco" on the calendar becomes a reflex SFO booking and a downtown hotel — and then the meeting turns out to be at Apple in Cupertino or Nvidia in Santa Clara, 45 minutes south, and the trip is now two hours of the 101 a day. The headquarters run 50 miles from the city through Silicon Valley to the East Bay, and two choices decide everything: which submarket, and which of three airports.

“In the Bay Area, the airport is half the decision. Fly SFO for a Silicon Valley campus and you've bought an hour of the 101 before you've said hello.”— Rachel Julian, Founder & Editor-in-Chief

Which airport — SFO, SJC, or Oakland?

Three commercial airports, and the right one depends on the campus. San Francisco (SFO) is the choice for the city itself and the Peninsula, with BART into downtown and the most connections. San José Mineta (SJC) is the one travelers forget and shouldn't — for Silicon Valley (Santa Clara, Cupertino, San Jose, Los Gatos, Fremont) it's often 10–20 minutes from the campus versus 40-plus from SFO. Oakland (OAK) serves the East Bay — Oakland itself, the Tri-Valley, and San Ramon — and can be a quicker, cheaper option on the right connection. The rule: SFO for the city and Peninsula, SJC for the valley, OAK for the East Bay.

Mountain View / Palo Alto
The Googleplex & Stanford; SJC ≈ SFO — Google (Alphabet), HP Inc.
Menlo Park
Mid-Peninsula; between SFO and SJC — Meta.
Downtown San Jose
Walkable core; fly SJC (~10 min) — Adobe, eBay.
Peninsula — San Mateo / Foster City / Redwood Shores
Bayside corridor; fly SFO (~15 min) — Gilead Sciences, Visa, Franklin Resources, Electronic Arts.
Los Gatos
South edge of the valley; fly SJC — Netflix.
East Bay — Fremont
Southern I-880 tech edge; fly SJC (~20 min) — Lam Research, TD Synnex.
East Bay — Downtown Oakland
City Center & Lake Merritt; fly OAK (~15 min) — Clorox, PG&E.
East Bay — Tri-Valley (Pleasanton / Dublin)
Over the hills off I-580/680; OAK or SJC — Workday, Ross Stores.

What should you check wherever you land?

Submarket gets you close; the room still has to protect the work. Run any Bay Area hotel through the Sales-Ready basics — a real work surface, a quiet room, a lobby you'd host in — using the hotel details that decide the trip and the Sales-Ready Index.

The standard

In the Bay Area, "where to stay" is two questions wearing one coat: which submarket, and which airport. San Francisco is a walkable downtown trip; Silicon Valley is a fly-into-SJC, stay-near-the-campus trip; the East Bay flies Oakland. Get both right and the 101 stays off your morning.
